Our story

Built for the Long Island you actually live in

Most coverage of Long Island is written from somewhere else, about somewhere else. Long Island Wave was built to close that gap: a local publication that covers the Island the way locals actually live it, from the new spot in your downtown to the project reshaping your commute.

That means the practical things first. Where to eat this week. What is opening and what is closing. Who is building what, and what it means for your town. How to spend a Saturday without leaving the Island. The businesses, events and people that make Nassau and Suffolk more than a place you sleep.

Long Island Wave is published by Wave Agency, a Long Island digital agency based in Melville. We build for the web for a living, and this is the publication we wanted our own neighbors to have: fast, free, and genuinely local.

If it would not matter to someone who lives here, it does not run.
The one test every story has to pass
How to use the Wave

Four ways in

  1. Read

    The news, every day

Local stories across Business, Food & Drink, Health, Beauty, Lifestyle and Events, all free in the archive.

  2. Plan

    The calendar

A running calendar of local events across both counties, so the weekend never sneaks up on you.

  3. Find

    Resources and the Marketplace

A directory of local businesses and services, plus products and offers from local makers.

  4. Join

    The community

Member conversations with readers across the Island. A free account takes an email and a one-time code, nothing more.

What we stand for

Six things we hold to

Not a mission statement. The actual working rules that decide what runs and what does not.

Local or it does not run

Every story has to matter to someone in Nassau or Suffolk. We do not pad the site with national wire copy dressed up as news.

Useful beats loud

We would rather tell you where to eat on Friday than chase a headline. If a reader cannot do something with a story, we ask why we are running it.

Honest about businesses

We cover local businesses because readers care about them, not because anyone paid for coverage. When something is sponsored, it says so, plainly.

Written by locals

Our contributors live here: business owners, event organizers, and people who know their towns first-hand. The door is open at Write for the Wave.

The writer's voice survives

We edit for clarity and length, never to make everyone sound the same. If a piece stops sounding like the person who wrote it, we have failed at our job.

Free, and staying free

No paywall, anywhere on the site. Long Island Wave is supported by local advertisers who belong in front of this readership, and readers never pay to read.

Every Friday

The Weekly Wave

One free email a week: new openings, the events worth your weekend, and the people and places shaping how Long Island lives. It lands on Friday, in time to plan, and it costs nothing. Sign up here.
