Delete your account

You can delete your Long Island Wave account whenever you like, and deleting means deleting. This page is the whole procedure and an honest list of what goes and what stays.

In the app

This is the fastest route, and it takes effect the moment you confirm.

  1. Open the Long Island Wave app and tap the round account button at the top right of any screen.
  2. Sign in if you are not already. The control only exists on an account, so there is nothing to delete until you are signed in.
  3. Under You, below Sign out, tap Delete my account.
  4. Confirm. The account is gone at that moment and you are signed out on every device.

If you have already uninstalled the app

You do not need to reinstall anything. Write to [email protected] from the email address on the account, say that you want it deleted, and we will delete it and reply to confirm. We do this within seven days, and usually the same day.

We ask you to write from the account's own address because that is the only way we can tell it is your account and not somebody else's.

What is deleted

All of it, permanently, with no recovery period and no archived copy:

  • Your account record: name, email address, and cell number if you added one.
  • Your profile photograph, removed from our storage as well as from the site.
  • Every comment and community post you wrote. They are published under your name, and leaving them behind would attribute a person's words to an account that no longer exists.
  • Every article you liked, and the tallies on those articles are corrected in the same operation.
  • Every sign-in session, on every device, and any half-finished sign-in codes.

What is kept, and for how long

Two things survive deleting your account, and neither is part of it:

  • A newsletter subscription is separate. If you signed up for The Weekly Wave, that lives in its own list and is not touched by deleting your account. Use the unsubscribe link at the foot of any issue, or ask us at [email protected].
  • Messages you sent us through the contact, support or event-submission forms are correspondence rather than account data, and we keep them as business records. Ask us and we will delete those too.

We keep no shadow copy of a deleted account, and we do not sell or rent reader information to anyone. Our privacy policy covers what we collect while you are still with us.
