Blue Point Brewing Co. will pour from more than 100 casks at its 22nd Annual Cask Ales Festival on Saturday, November 7, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Blue Point Brewpub at 225 West Main Street in Patchogue. The brewery announced the date and ticket details Wednesday morning.
General admission is $40 and includes a five-ounce Cask Fest tasting glass and samples from the full lineup. The afternoon brings local food trucks to the brewpub along with live sets from Blink 180 and The 90s Band. When the festival wraps at 6 p.m., the party moves inside the tasting room until 10 p.m., with The 90s Band playing into the evening. The event runs rain or shine and is open to guests 21 and older.
What a cask festival is
Cask ale is beer finished in the vessel it is served from. Instead of being filtered, force-carbonated and kegged, the beer conditions naturally in the cask, which gives brewers a one-time canvas: a base beer can be dosed with fruit, coffee, spices or dry hops, and the result exists only in that single cask. The festival pours small-batch and one-of-a-kind casks from breweries across the country, so the list is different every year and most of it cannot be tasted anywhere else.
In the announcement, senior brand manager Chris DiOrio described the festival as a Long Island beer tradition in its 22nd year and a chance for the community to taste rare cask ales in the brewery's hometown.
A Patchogue institution
Blue Point Brewing was founded in Patchogue in 1998 and has grown into one of the largest breweries in New York, with distribution along the East Coast. Its flagship Toasted Lager has won a gold medal at the World Beer Cup. The brewery has run the cask festival on Main Street for more than two decades, and recent editions have drawn beer fans from across the Island for an afternoon that regularly sells through its tickets.
