Before dentistry, Dr. Thomas Patrie was a cellist. He trained at the Oberlin Conservatory and built a working music career, which is not the usual route into a dental operatory but turns out to be a useful one: both disciplines run on precise hands and a tolerance for practicing the same small motion until it is right.
He earned his DDS at the Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine and now teaches there as a Clinical Assistant Professor of General Dentistry, alongside his practice at e.s.i. Healthy Dentistry in Smithtown.
His clinical focus is natural and biologic dentistry, the approach that treats the mouth as connected to the rest of the body rather than as a separate system. He is certified in safe mercury amalgam removal, the protocol for taking out old silver fillings without exposing the patient to what comes off them, and he is board-certified as a Naturopathic Medical Doctor in Integrative Biologic Dental Medicine.
He lives in Setauket with his family and still makes time for surfing and for music.
