Toys R Us is coming back to Long Island. The toy chain's own store locator now lists a Toys R Us Holiday Shop at Tanger Outlets Deer Park, at 152 The Arches Circle, and it is the only standalone Toys R Us location the brand shows anywhere on the Island. For anyone who grew up being marched past Geoffrey the Giraffe on a Saturday morning, that is a sentence that would have sounded impossible five years ago.

Part of the brand's biggest comeback since the lights went out

The Deer Park shop arrives as part of a national expansion the company announced on September 17. Toys R Us, now owned by the brand management firm WHP Global, is opening 120 new standalone stores across the country this holiday season in partnership with Go! Retail Group, an Austin based, family owned retailer that has run pop-up and year-round stores since 1993. By the time the season peaks, the company says 160 standalone Toys R Us stores will be open nationwide, on top of the shops it already operates inside Macy's department stores.

Two of the 120 are landing in New York State: one at the Walden Galleria outside Buffalo, and one at Tanger Outlets Deer Park. That makes the Deer Park store the Island's first freestanding Toys R Us since the chain collapsed into bankruptcy in 2017 and closed more than 700 stores nationwide the following year, taking every Long Island location with it.

What the new stores will actually be

The company says the new shops will carry a curated lineup of the season's biggest toys and collectibles, with LEGO, Barbie, Hot Wheels and Pokemon on the marquee alongside newer obsessions like KPop Demon Hunters. Select locations in the rollout will also get what the company calls Creator Studios, spaces where toy brands and content creators can film reveals and host events, and some will add candy shops and cafes. The company has not said which of those extras, if any, are coming to Deer Park.

The locator lists the Deer Park location as a Holiday Shop, and the whole 120-store wave is built around the holiday season, so shoppers should think of this as the return of the Toys R Us store run, not necessarily a permanent tenant. Go! Retail Group operates both seasonal pop-ups and year-round stores, and neither company has said which the Deer Park shop will turn out to be. An opening date has not been announced either; the announcement pegs the rollout to this holiday season, and the store has already appeared on the company's own map.

The name never fully left Long Island

Strictly speaking, Toys R Us has been hiding in plain sight here for a while. The brand's locator shows ten Toys R Us shops operating inside Macy's stores across Long Island, from Green Acres in Valley Stream and Roosevelt Field in Garden City out to Hampton Bays, with stops at Manhasset, Lake Success, Massapequa, Melville, Walt Whitman in Huntington Station, South Shore in Bay Shore and Smith Haven in Lake Grove.

A shop-in-shop tucked into a department store is not the same thing, though, and everybody knows it. The Toys R Us that Long Islanders remember was a destination: a big box you walked into with a list and left with something that was not on it. The Deer Park store is the first time since 2018 that the brand will have its own front door on the Island.

Why Deer Park makes sense

Tanger Outlets Deer Park is the kind of place a holiday toy store was invented for: an open air outlet center that western Suffolk already treats as a default destination for gift shopping season. A toy store with 70 years of brand recognition, opening in time for the holidays at a center built for exactly that kind of trip, is about as clean a fit as retail gets.

Globally, the brand never actually died. Toys R Us still generates more than 2 billion dollars a year in retail sales through more than 1,680 stores and e-commerce operations in 37 countries, and WHP Global has been steadily rebuilding its American footprint through the Macy's partnership, airport shops and Navy Exchange locations. The 120-store wave is the biggest single step in that rebuild, and Long Island is on the map for it.

What to watch for

The store's opening date, and what it looks like inside, should come into focus as the season gets closer; the company points shoppers to its store locator for updates. For now, the facts are simple enough to text a friend: Toys R Us is opening a store at Tanger Outlets Deer Park this holiday season, its first standalone store on Long Island in eight years.
