For more than ten years, Dawn Gonzalez sold her thrifted designer finds the modern way: photographed, listed and shipped, with live online sales and a private Facebook group of regulars watching for new arrivals. This fall she unlocked a door of her own. Thrift the Runway, her curated women's resale boutique, is now open at 2717 Grand Avenue in Bellmore.
By her own telling, the opening was deliberately quiet: no balloons, no ribbon, just the racks filled and the door propped open while she builds the place up. The shop announced itself to Bellmore through her own posts in September, and the boutique has been keeping regular open days since.
One woman, twenty years of digging
Gonzalez, a lifelong New Yorker, has been thrifting for more than two decades, and Thrift the Runway is a one-woman operation: she sources every piece, inspects it and prices it herself. The pitch she makes to shoppers is that she does the digging so they get the find.
The racks carry women's clothing, handbags, shoes and accessories, a mix of preloved and new. Labels that move through the shop and its online store have included Zara, Anthropologie and premium denim, along with statement jackets and dresses. Each piece is graded on the site as new, near new or excellent condition, with cleaning done when a garment calls for it. Designer handbags come through resale-industry suppliers, and Gonzalez says she can request an authentication certificate for luxury bags sourced from those partners.
The announcement traveled fast through the local Facebook groups, where her opening posts drew a string of welcomes and promises to come browse from Bellmore and Merrick neighbors. Grand Avenue is Bellmore's main commercial strip, and foot traffic there is the kind of audience a decade of online selling never handed her.
Her name travels in the resale world beyond Long Island, too: she is currently listed among the nominees for Best Resale Boutique at The Thrift Ball, an awards event for the thrifting industry.
The storefront joins the online shop, not replaces it
The Bellmore shop is an addition, not a move. The online store at thrifttherunway.com continues, with new arrivals added several times a week and often daily, live sales announced through text alerts, and the private Facebook group getting first looks. The storefront gives the business what online selling cannot: a fitting room, a browse, and a stylist in the room, since Gonzalez styles customers as well as sourcing for them.
Bellmore's shopping streets have been collecting independent women's boutiques over the past couple of years, and resale in particular has been growing across Long Island, from village consignment shops to the national chains opening in former big-box spaces. A curated single-owner shop sits at the opposite end of that spectrum from the warehouse model: fewer pieces, each one chosen.
