Scrooge returns to Main Street in Port Jefferson on Saturday. Theatre Three opens its annual production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol on Nov. 7, and it runs through Dec. 27 at the theater at 412 Main Street. The theater's own listing calls this its 42nd annual production of the show, which makes it one of the longest-running holiday traditions on a Long Island stage.

The production

The adaptation is by Jeffrey Sanzel, and it follows the familiar arc: the miser Ebenezer Scrooge, visited on Christmas Eve by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. The show runs about two hours, including a 15-minute intermission.

All evening performances start at 7 p.m., an earlier curtain the theater sets so families with children can make a weeknight show.

What it costs

  • Every November performance: $30.
  • Wednesday matinees: $30.
  • Adults: $45.
  • Seniors 65 and older, and students 13 and older: $36.
  • Children 5 to 12: $30. Children under 5 are not admitted.

The November price is the one to note: any of the month's performances, including opening weekend, costs $30 a seat, against $45 for an adult ticket in December. Groups of 10 or more can call group sales at 631-928-1130 for a discount.

More at Theatre Three this season

The holiday run shares the building with several other shows:

  • The New York Bee Gees: one night only, Thursday, Nov. 19.
  • Barnaby Saves Christmas: the children's theater holiday show, Nov. 21 through Dec. 27.
  • Hollywood Holiday: a Third Act Cabaret program on Dec. 3.
  • New Year's Laughin' Eve: comedy on Dec. 31.

After the holidays the mainstage moves to Neil Simon's Biloxi Blues, Jan. 16 to Feb. 7, followed by Forever Plaid, Feb. 20 to March 21. Season subscriptions are on sale now at 25 percent off single tickets, according to the theater.

Make a day of it

December brings the village's own Victorian weekend: the 30th Port Jefferson Dickens Festival is set for Dec. 5 and 6, a few blocks downhill from the theater, so a matinee and the festival can share a Saturday.
