The name on the awning matches the street sign. The Audrey sits at 30 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay, on the stretch of storefronts that carries the hamlet down toward the harbor, and the room takes its assignment from the address: be the place on Audrey Avenue that people walk into without checking their watch first. The doors open at 11:30 in the morning and stay open until 11 most nights, half past midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and the kitchen and the bar trade the lead back and forth all day like a band that knows the set list cold.
A room that runs on hours, not courses
Most restaurants organize themselves around a menu. The Audrey organizes itself around the clock, and says so plainly: the house calls itself a kitchen and bar built for the hours of the day, and the day is mapped in three movements. Midday is coffee and a casual lunch, espresso at a real table, then salads, sandwiches, toasts and flatbreads, quick if you need quick and unhurried if you do not. Five o'clock turns the room toward the evening, when dinner arrives with cocktails and a wine list worth actually reading. Then ten o'clock winds the kitchen down and opens the bar up, and on weekend nights the last round lands well after midnight.
It is a simple idea that turns out to be rare on Long Island. Plenty of rooms do lunch well or dinner well. Very few hold one room open, and genuinely appealing, from the first cappuccino to the last stirred drink, and the ones that try usually feel like two restaurants sharing a lease. The Audrey feels like one room with a long attention span.
Oysters in Oyster Bay, and pizza by the slab
The menu starts where a restaurant in this town should: oysters on the half shell, from a raw bar that anchors both the lunch and dinner lists. From there it moves through a toast section that reads like a small argument for keeping things simple, ricotta with honey, stracciatella with fig, caprese, zucchini with pesto, and a charcuterie board built from the serious shelf: Prosciutto di Parma, bresaola, hot soppressata, aged Manchego, cave-aged Gruyere.
The pizza is Roman style, cut in slabs rather than wedges, and it runs from a straight margherita to a truffle and mushroom pie and a ricotta di bufala with truffle that belongs on the table next to something cold. The rest of the list covers the ground an all-day room needs covered: meatballs, a truffle mac and cheese, a tuna tostada, pulled pork sliders, a lobster roll, and a soft pretzel that arrives sized for the middle of the table.
The happy hour worth planning an afternoon around
Monday through Friday, from 4 to 6 PM, The Audrey runs one of the better happy hours on the North Shore: five-dollar beers and seltzers, ten-dollar house wine, ten-dollar pizzas, and chicken wings at a dollar apiece with a six-wing minimum. It lands in the two quiet hours between the end of lunch and the start of dinner proper, at the bar or at a table, which makes it the rare happy hour you can actually get a seat for.
Evenings, and later
After dark the cocktail list takes over, a short and careful one rather than a long and clever one: a house spritz, an Old Fashioned, a Paloma, and a namesake or two that nod to the address. The wine list runs from house pours by the glass to bottles from the regions the group loves most, and the room backs it up with a steady calendar, live acoustic acts on the weekend calendar, a karaoke night, and trivia on Thursdays.
On Friday and Saturday nights the bar holds the room until 12:30, which quietly fills a gap Oyster Bay has had for a while: somewhere to land after a show, a late train, or a long dinner somewhere else.
The family behind the room
The Audrey is part of Stellina Hospitality, the group behind Stellina Ristorante and L'Étoile in Oyster Bay and Casa Stellina in Farmingdale. Within that family it plays the casual, come-as-you-are role: Stellina is the chef-driven Italian dining room, L'Étoile is the French bistro, and The Audrey is the one you can walk into at noon on a Tuesday or midnight on a Saturday and find the lights on either way.
On the calendar at The Audrey
The room keeps a steady schedule beyond the day arc: live acoustic acts on Friday and Saturday nights, a weekly quiz, and a weekly Ladies Night. There is no cover on any of the music nights, and the full dinner menu runs throughout. The current lineup, each with details on our events calendar:
