Greenport has a new store that looks like a page from a coloring book, because that is the idea. Color Our Town, the company behind the Color Greenport and Color North Fork coloring books, has opened The 2D Shop at 310 Front Street, and it describes the space as a chance to step inside a life-sized coloring book.

What the shop is

Color Our Town's books turn photographs of real places into black line drawings for people to fill in. The 2D Shop takes that black-and-white world off the page. According to the company, every piece in the store is drawn in two dimensions, from mugs and plates to watches and cameras, so the room and what is in it read as outlines waiting for color.

The shop's collection, listed on the company's site under 2D Exclusives, gives a sense of the range. There is framed art of everyday objects drawn in that flat line style, including sneakers, a mixtape, a camera, a balloon dog, a rubber duck, an espresso, an ice cream cone, a popsicle, headphones and a succulent. There are portraits of Teddy Roosevelt, Albert Einstein, Frida Kahlo, M.C. Escher and the comics artists Will Eisner and Frank Miller. There are drawn light switch covers, a 2D mouse house and a retro TV set that works as an iPad display. Framed pieces are listed at $200, switch covers at $35 and the mouse house at $50.

The company behind it

Color Our Town was created by Jake Rose, a New York City native who studied history and American studies at Drew University and who works on the business with his father, Ron. Rose photographs the places in each book, artists turn the photographs into line drawings, and he writes the history that runs beside each page. The company says it was founded in 2017, and its catalog now covers cities and towns across the country, from Boston and Charleston to Key West and Seattle.

The North Fork has been part of the series from the start. The company sells Color Greenport, Color North Fork and Color Riverhead coloring books, along with pencil sets, puzzles, stickers and greeting cards drawn from local landmarks such as the Greenport Carousel, the Bug Lighthouse, Horton Point Lighthouse, Love Lane, the Big Duck, Briermere Farm, Hallockville Museum Farm and the Jamesport Country Store. There are Long Island books for Oyster Bay, Sag Harbor, Shelter Island and the Hamptons as well.

Where it is

The 2D Shop is at 310 Front Street in downtown Greenport Village. Color Our Town lists the shop as now open. The full 2D collection and the North Fork books are also on the company website.
