Taking Back Sunday is reopening the album that took a band from Amityville basements to arena stages. A 20th anniversary edition of Louder Now arrives October 16 through Craft Recordings, pairing the 2006 record with two B-sides from the same sessions and a run of collector pressings, and the band has been marking the birthday the way fans would want: by playing the whole thing front to back.

The Long Island record that went national

Taking Back Sunday formed in Amityville in 1999, in the middle of the most productive stretch the Long Island rock scene has ever had. Their 2002 debut Tell All Your Friends became the defining document of that scene, the record that made the rest of the country care what was happening in Nassau and Suffolk basements and VFW halls.

Louder Now, four years later, was the leap. The band's third album and first for a major label debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 when it landed in April 2006, the highest chart position the band had ever reached. Its lead single, MakeDamnSure, became the song that followed the band everywhere afterward, a platinum-certified staple of mid-2000s radio and MTV that still closes shows two decades later.

For a certain generation of Long Islanders, that spring is a time stamp. Louder Now was the sound of car speakers in high school parking lots from Massapequa to Patchogue, made by a band whose members had been in those same parking lots a few years earlier.

What is in the anniversary edition

The new edition keeps the original eleven tracks and adds Brooklyn (If You See Something, Say Something) and Sleep, two B-sides from the Louder Now era that have spent 20 years as deep-catalog favorites. On vinyl, the bonus tracks ride along on a 7-inch packaged with the album.

Collectors have choices to make. The standard anniversary pressing comes on Silver Screen colored vinyl, with limited variants in the mix including an ultra-clear pressing with glitter, a burgundy metallic, a coke-bottle clear and an amazonite swirl, plus a CD edition and a box set through the band's own store. The band confirmed the October 16 date on its site, where preorders are live now.

Played in full, 20 years on

The band has built the anniversary around performances of the complete album. Taking Back Sunday played Louder Now start to finish at Riot Fest in Chicago in September, then brought the full-album show home to the area with a September 27 night at Brooklyn Paramount, and the celebration continues with a headline date at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.

No show on Long Island itself has been announced as part of the anniversary run so far, which local fans will read as an invitation to keep checking. This is a band that has never been shy about coming home, and their biggest hometown shows tend to arrive when there is something to celebrate.

Why this one matters here

Plenty of bands pass through Long Island. Very few are of it the way Taking Back Sunday is, and Louder Now is the record where the scene that raised them proved it could produce something the whole country would sing back. Twenty years later the album is getting the deluxe treatment national institutions get, and the return address on it still says Amityville.

The anniversary edition of Louder Now is out October 16. For anyone who wore out the original CD somewhere on the Southern State, the glitter pressing is a reasonable act of self-forgiveness.
