Suffolk County is putting veterans at the front of the hiring line next week. A county job fair on Thursday, November 5 runs from 5 to 8 p.m. in Farmingdale, and the first hour is reserved for veterans only, County Executive Ed Romaine announced. The general public is welcome from 6 to 8 p.m.

The event is aimed at connecting veterans with employers, training opportunities and local resources, and it lands the week before Veterans Day. Suffolk County is home to the largest veteran population in New York State, according to the county's announcement.

Who is hiring

The employer list crosses private industry, health care and public-sector work. Employers attending include Canon U.S.A., Northwell, the Northport VA, Jake's 58 and Suffolk OTB, United Veterans Beacon House, Kedrion Biopharma, the New York State Troopers, New York State Civil Service, Macy's, the Internal Revenue Service and the Suffolk County Police Department, with more on the roster.

The county's Department of Labor and other county departments will have tables at the fair to connect residents with state and county resources beyond the job listings themselves.

Military skills, civilian work

The county's framing of the event leans on how directly military experience carries into civilian employers' needs: leadership, technical training and the specializations service members build up over a career in uniform. Several of the employers attending, the Northport VA and United Veterans Beacon House among them, work with veterans as their core mission.

Going on the day

The fair runs Thursday, November 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. in Farmingdale, with the 5 to 6 p.m. hour exclusively for veterans. The county's announcement directs job seekers to its Department of Labor for more information, at suffolkcountyny.gov or 631-853-6600, where the department also posts its year-round employment services.
