Daniel Cameron of North Babylon won the 12th annual Catholic Health Suffolk County Marathon on Sunday, October 18, finishing the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, 42 minutes and 1 second. Cristin Delaney-Guille of Long Beach, 45, was the top woman, crossing in 3:07:38, good for 20th place overall in a field of marathoners from across Long Island and beyond.
Cameron finished eight minutes clear of the field. Stephen Bienemann of Smithtown took second in 2:50:02, edging Brooklyn's Hengzhi Zhu by four seconds, with Dean Mauri of Amityville fourth in 2:51:04. In the wheelchair division, Michael Larose of Bay Shore covered the course in 2:45:08.
Babylon to Bay Shore, over the causeway
Sunday's marathon, half marathon and 10K started in Babylon Village at 7:30 a.m. and finished at Gardiner County Park in Bay Shore. The course sends marathoners and half marathoners across the Robert Moses Causeway above the Great South Bay, the crossing the race bills as the signature stretch of its course.
The half marathon went to Aaron Robertson of Melville in 1:18:09, five seconds ahead of Bay Shore's Darin Cofield. Kristen Molloy of Merrick was the fastest woman in the half at 1:27:00.
A weekend built around veterans
The race is run as the Suffolk County Marathon Weekend, with proceeds supporting veterans. Saturday, October 17 carried the 5K family trail run and the 1K kids fun run at Gardiner County Park, and Sunday's slate added a relay alongside the three individual road races. Organizers bill the event as a race weekend for every distance, from the kids run to runners chasing a Boston Marathon qualifying time.
The local podium
The top of Sunday's results reads like a map of the South Shore. The marathon winner trains in North Babylon, minutes from the starting line. The runner-up came from Smithtown, the fourth-place finisher from Amityville, the fifth from Commack. The women's winner made the drive from Long Beach, and the wheelchair champion lives in Bay Shore, the town where every race ended.
Full results for every distance, including age group placings, are posted on the race's results page.
