For the tenth year in a row, the hospital on East Main Street in Bay Shore has been named one of Healthgrades' America's 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery. Northwell Health announced on October 27 that South Shore University Hospital earned the 2027 award, keeping an unbroken run that started in 2018, and that Healthgrades ranked it No. 2 in New York State for cardiac surgery this year.

The heart surgery honor was one of several 2027 Healthgrades designations the hospital received.

The 2027 awards

  • One of America's 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery, for 10 consecutive years, 2018 through 2027.
  • No. 2 in New York State for cardiac surgery in 2027.
  • One of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention, for six years in a row, 2022 through 2027. Coronary intervention covers procedures such as opening blocked heart arteries with stents.
  • One of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement in 2027.

How the list is made

Healthgrades builds these rankings from Medicare data, comparing hospitals on patient outcomes such as in-hospital mortality and complication rates after adjusting for how sick patients were going in. The 2027 awards are based on Medicare patient records from 2023 through 2025. Hospitals that make the lists had results consistently better than expected for their patients over that period.

What the hospital offers

The Bay Shore hospital's heart program, South Shore Heart and Lung, handles open-heart surgery, transcatheter valve procedures, coronary intervention and electrophysiology, which treats heart rhythm problems. Its orthopedic program offers minimally invasive and robotic-assisted joint replacement.

The hospital has been adding room for that work. Its 200,000-square-foot Bohlsen Pavilion was built to expand specialty services, with more private patient rooms, more operating rooms and newer equipment.

Irene Macyk, the hospital's president, credited the physicians, nurses and clinical teams for the decade on the list, according to Northwell's announcement.
