Downtown Sayville has a trading card shop. South Shore Grails is open at 126 West Main Street, selling sports cards alongside the three big collectible card games of the moment, Pokémon, One Piece and Dragon Ball, from sealed boxes to single cards to professionally graded slabs.

What is in the cases

The shop sorts its stock by series. On the sports side it carries football, basketball and baseball cards. On the game side it carries Pokémon sealed product, singles and graded cards; One Piece boosters and sets; and Dragon Ball, including the Fusion World line.

Graded cards, the ones authenticated and sealed in hard plastic cases by third-party graders, are their own section, with slabs from PSA, BGS and CGC.

The shop says it checks every card and describes each one honestly, and that it restocks weekly, with new sealed product and sought-after singles going into the cases as they arrive. Its name comes from collector slang: a grail is the one card a collector has been hunting for longest.

Shop online, pick up on Main Street

South Shore Grails runs an online store alongside the storefront, and customers can reserve cards online and collect them in person in Sayville rather than waiting on shipping. Walk-ins are welcome too, for anyone who would rather look through the cases and talk cards in person.

Why a card shop, and why now

Trading cards have become a family activity again. Pokémon draws collectors of every age, while One Piece and Dragon Ball draw in fans of the anime series behind them. Sports cards, meanwhile, run from a pack bought on a whim to graded rookie cards traded like collectibles.

A storefront gives Sayville's collectors a place to see cards in hand before buying, which is the part of the hobby that buying online cannot replace.
