The pizza truck run by Serpico's Bread Co. now has a steady Melville address. The company takes online orders for pickup and scheduled preorders at 260 Spagnoli Road, where the truck serves its sourdough-based pizzas and sandwiches alongside the breads the business was built on.

The menu posted to its ordering page runs from a 10-inch margherita at $14.99 and a 10-inch pepperoni at $16.99 to an upside-down Sicilian slice, sauce over the cheese, finished with oregano and parmesan, at $5.

From a pandemic kitchen to a fleet

Serpico's Bread Co. began in 2020, when the Serpico family started baking bread together during the pandemic and the loaves outgrew the household. The business first sold under the name Side Hustle Bread and later took the family name as it grew into a truck and catering operation.

Founder Jim Serpico spent his earlier career producing television and now describes himself as a breadmaker and pizzaiolo. He hosts a podcast about bread and the bread business called Bread For the People, and he teaches private pizza tastings in home kitchens, an event format that starts at $75 per person for groups of six or more and covers stretching Neapolitan dough through topping and firing at least six pies.

What comes out of the oven

The bread list centers on sourdough. Standing loaves include a San Francisco-style sour, a rustic loaf, cheddar jalapeño, garlic rosemary, cranberry walnut, and a prosciutto bread the company also sells as two-bite prosciutto bites.

On the pizza side, the company works across styles: Neapolitan and Roman rounds, New York and cracker-thin pies, and a Chicago deep dish available through its catering arm. Its Calabrian Heat sandwich placed in the top six at the International Italian Sandwich Championship, held during the Pizza Expo in Las Vegas.

Beyond the Melville truck, the company books the truck for weddings, corporate lunches and private parties through its site, and it hosts a monthly pizza tasting residency at WineUdesign, an eight-course tasting menu of pizzas paired with wine for a limited guest list.
