Atticus Finch is coming to Long Wharf. Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor will stage Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, in Aaron Sorkin's adaptation of the novel, from Monday, November 9, through Sunday, November 29, 2026. It is the theater's fall production in its Literature Live! series, which brings stage versions of books taught in school to East End audiences, and to students free of charge.

The production

Sorkin's version tells the story of the Maycomb, Alabama, trial of Tom Robinson, a Black man falsely accused of assaulting a white woman, through Scout and Jem Finch, who narrate as their father defends him. Bay Street's run is directed by Stephen Hamilton, who adapted and directed Fahrenheit 451 for the same series. The theater lists the running time at about 90 minutes with no intermission.

The cast, as announced by the theater:

  • J. Stephen Brantley as Atticus Finch
  • Kendra Foster McBride as Scout Finch
  • Ryan W. Schaefer as Jem Finch
  • Matthew Schiavoni as Dill Harris
  • Judah J. A. Fabré as Tom Robinson
  • Erin Margaret Pettigrew as Calpurnia
  • Hope Hamilton as Mayella Ewell
  • Mitchell Bolen Cetuk as Bob Ewell
  • Matthew Conlon as Judge Taylor
  • Joe Pallister as Sheriff Heck Tate
  • Michael Santora as Horace Gilmer and Dr. Reynolds
  • Kirk Koczanowski as Mr. Cunningham, Link Deas and Boo Radley

Free for students, two ways

Literature Live! runs free performances for middle and high school groups, with the script adapted in length for the classroom, study guides for teachers and, where possible, talkbacks with the company after the show. Separately, Bay Street's Free Student Sundays program lets any student with a valid ID see one Sunday performance at no charge. The theater also runs a Pay What You Can program.

Bay Street does not recommend the play for children under 12. The story deals with racism, violence and a false accusation of sexual assault.
