Every fall, Ralph's Famous Italian Ices shops across Long Island post the same notice: last day of the season, stock up, see you in spring. This year the Great Neck shop is sitting that ritual out. Ralph's of Great Neck announced on its own account that there will be no last scoop, because the store at 150 Middle Neck Road is staying open all year long.
The announcement, styled as a fake farewell that pivots mid-sentence into the year-round news, answers what the shop says customers have been asking since the weather turned. While sibling locations, including the Glen Head shop, have been posting their final days and urging customers to fill their freezers, Great Neck will keep scooping through the winter.
A new chapter for the Middle Neck Road shop
The year-round plan caps a year of change at the store. The Great Neck location came under new ownership this past spring, and the new operators have been steadily adding to what the shop offers: the store now carries kosher certification, which it announces prominently on its page, and delivery runs through DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub.
The menu is the familiar Ralph's lineup at full scale, more than 150 flavors of water ices, cream ices, sherbets and ice cream, from the classic lemon and rainbow to the candy-and-cereal combinations that rotate through the chain's boards. Ralph's traces its history to 1928, when the original shop opened on Staten Island, and the franchise map now covers much of Long Island, which is exactly why a location breaking from the seasonal rhythm stands out.
Why year-round matters here
Great Neck's Middle Neck Road corridor keeps foot traffic through the winter in a way beach-town strips do not, with the peninsula's restaurants, schools and commuter flow a block in every direction. A frozen dessert counter open in January is a bet that the neighborhood treats ices as a habit rather than a season, and the shop is making that bet publicly.
For everyone else on the Island, the seasonal clock still applies: other Ralph's locations are posting their last days now, and most go dark until March or April.
