E.L. Doctorow published Ragtime in 1975. On Saturday, Dec. 5, his daughter, the folk singer-songwriter Caroline Doctorow, marks the novel's 50th anniversary at The Church in Sag Harbor with a multimedia program built from the book, her father's radio interviews, family photographs and songs. It is one of three dates at the Madison Street arts center between now and early December, along with a Bill Evans-inspired chamber concert this Saturday and a holiday makers market Thanksgiving weekend.

Dec. 5: Ragtime at 50

The Church counts E.L. Doctorow among the Sag Harbor figures it honors as its Sag Harbor Saints. In the 90-minute presentation, Caroline Doctorow reads excerpts from the novel, plays recordings of her father talking about his work and shares stories about his life, then performs songs tied to the occasion, including material connected to the book's later life as a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. An audience Q&A closes the afternoon, and Book Hampton of East Hampton is the bookseller for the event.

Caroline Doctorow has released eleven solo albums. Her most recent, Dreaming in Vinyl, reached No. 2 on the national folk radio airplay charts, and the Long Island Arts Council gave her its Alexander Award in 2018.

  • When: Saturday, Dec. 5, 2 to 3:30 p.m.
  • Tickets: $25, or $22 for members

Nov. 7: Time Remembered

The Reflections in Music series opens its season this Saturday, Nov. 7, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Artistic director and pianist Bruce Wolosoff takes the program's title from Bill Evans' composition Time Remembered, and the evening traces the classical music that shaped the jazz pianist and the music he went on to inspire: Bach, Ravel, Debussy, Poulenc, Dutilleux, Stravinsky and Ligeti, plus a world premiere by Wolosoff.

He is joined by clarinetist Narek Arutyunian, violinist Christina Nam, cellist Michael Nicolas and flutist Catherine Winters Boyack. General admission is $30.

Nov. 28 and 29: the Holiday Makers Market

The sixth annual Holiday Makers Market fills The Church on Saturday and Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. More than 20 makers selected by The Church sell ceramics, candles, jewelry, knitwear, leatherwork, textiles, stationery, tea, honey and home goods. The list includes Argyle Apiaries, MerSeá Gardens, Shipwreck Montauk, Gretchen Comly Design and Blue Moon Mahjong.

New this year is a Creativity Lab on the studio level, with crafts for children from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day; children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is $5 per day at the door, and children under 12 are free.
