Main Street in Northport Village has a record store. Northport Records opened on Saturday, October 31, at 121 Main Street, selling new and used vinyl records and used CDs, and buying records from people ready to part with a collection.

What is in the shop

The store stocks new pressings alongside used records, sorted into bins for browsing, plus used CDs and music merchandise. It also buys records, so a box of LPs that has been sitting in a closet for decades has somewhere to go close to home.

The owner opened the shop to turn a lifelong love of music into a business, and describes it on the store's own page as more than a record store: a place where the community can come together around music. The store posts new arrivals and updates on its Instagram account, which has more than 1,100 followers.

A record store on a village main street

Vinyl sales have grown in the United States for well over a decade, and for many buyers the draw of a shop is the browsing: flipping through a bin, finding something that was not on the list, and talking about it with whoever is behind the counter. Northport's Main Street, lined with independent shops and restaurants running down to the harbor, is built for that kind of afternoon.

The opening adds to a busy fall downtown. Long Island Wave has covered a new charcuterie shop coming to the village and the 21st leg lamp lighting on Main Street, set for November 28.
