The corner of East Main Street where Riverhead meets the Peconic River has a settled name on it again. As of Tuesday, Moonfish Brewery Inc. has locked in its place at 221 East Main Street, the riverfront brewpub it has been running since last summer, on an arrangement that carries it through July 31, 2029.

That date is the story. For five years, the tenants at this address have read like a relay race, with each operator handing off before the ink dried. The new commitment means the team pouring beer beside the river intends to still be pouring it there at the end of the decade.

Third name on the corner in five years

The churn is easy to trace. Peconic County Brewing ran the address from early 2021, adding its own brewing operation in January 2023, before winding down at the start of 2024. Suffolk Hospitality Group followed under the name Riverhead Brewhouse in June 2025, with plans written to run until 2028. It never got close. That chapter ended within months, and the corporation behind Moonfish's Riverhead operation was registered with the state on August 20, 2025, right as the handoff happened.

Moonfish rebranded the space and held its grand opening at the start of December. Since then it has been running as a full brewpub, with a gastropub kitchen and cocktails alongside the taps, brewing its own beer on the premises and selling it where it is made. What it did not have until this week was a multi-year commitment standing in its own name.

Six years in the making, one year in the building

The company calls the brewpub a concept six years in the making, and the corporate record backs the arithmetic: Moonfish Brewery Inc. was formed in Suffolk County in March 2021, more than four years before it had a building to put the name on. The husband and wife team behind it, Rob Kurtz and Skye Hamburg, took over the former Brew House operation last August and spent the fall converting it before the December opening.

The pitch has stayed consistent since: a beer-first pub on the water, in a downtown that has spent the last few years filling in around it. Moonfish bills itself as Long Island's only true riverfront brewery, and whatever qualifiers that claim carries, the geography is real. The building sits directly on the Peconic, a few steps from the riverfront walk that connects downtown Riverhead's restaurants to the aquarium.

What this means if you just want a beer by the river

Nothing changes at the bar this week, which is the point. The kitchen runs a gastropub menu, with loaded tots, pepperoni pinwheels, schnackwurst sandwiches, caprese pizza and a southern fried chicken sandwich on the current card, and the taps carry the house beers the brewery has been building its identity around since winter. Hours run Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 9, Sunday noon to 7, with Mondays dark.

What changes is the horizon. Downtown Riverhead has watched a parade of tenants cycle through its best-located spaces, and a riverfront brewery is the kind of anchor that either sticks and defines a block or turns over and takes the block's momentum with it. Two operators in a row could not make the corner hold. The third one has now put its intention to stay in writing, with three more summers on the Peconic built into the plan.

Riverhead's Main Street has been one of the better Long Island downtown stories of the past few years, and most of it has happened one quiet step at a time: a theater renovation here, a new restaurant there, a new tenant in a long-empty storefront. Tuesday brought another one of those quiet steps. Nobody cuts a ribbon for it. But if you are deciding where to take someone for a beer outdoors before the season turns, the brewery on the river just made clear it is not going anywhere.
