The South Shore's turn at the mahjong table arrives this week. MJ Social, a club built around Mah Jongg, canasta and card games, is opening at 203A Long Beach Road in Island Park, and its booking calendar is already live: the first sessions go off Friday, September 25 at 1 p.m., with Saturday morning play following at 11.

A seat without the hosting

The club's premise is simple enough that anyone who has ever tried to organize a standing game will recognize it instantly. Somebody always has to host. Somebody always cancels. Somebody spends Wednesday texting four group chats to find a fourth. MJ Social removes all of that: reserve a seat online, show up alone or with friends, and the table, the tiles and the players are there. Equipment is provided for scheduled sessions and lessons, and some of the club's tables are automatic, the kind that shuffle the tiles and build the walls between hands.

Beyond drop-in open play, the club offers lessons in American Mah Jongg and canasta, memberships with additional play time, private instruction, and the space can be booked for birthdays, showers, fundraisers and work gatherings. Standard American play is the house game, and the club has said it will add Hong Kong style if players ask for it.

The women behind it

MJ Social is the work of Ellen Zwalsky and Michelle Kushner. Zwalsky, the founder, holds a master's degree in recreation therapy, has spent her career on the connection between play and wellbeing, has played Mah Jongg for more than thirty years and has taught at the college level. Kushner, the club's creative director, brings twenty years of brand building to the room itself, which leans warm and colorful rather than the folding-table aesthetic the game grew up on. The two have said the idea crystallized after 2020, when getting back together made plain how much people had missed simply having somewhere to go.

The first week of play

Booking runs through the club's website. After Friday's 1 p.m. opening sessions and Saturday's 11 a.m. open play, the calendar settles into a weekly rhythm: beginner lessons land Monday evening at 6:30, Wednesday morning at 11 and Friday afternoon, with open play and automatic-table sessions filling the afternoons and evenings around them into October. Parking is easier than most of Long Beach Road: the club has its own spots, street parking, and a municipal lot directly across the street.

A very old game having a very new moment

Mahjong's Long Island revival has been building all year, and it crossed from trend to real estate this month. A dedicated mahjong room opened on Northport's Main Street at the start of September, running lessons and league play on the North Shore, and when it did, the natural question was when the South Shore would get its own address. The answer turned out to be about three weeks. American Mah Jongg has deep roots here, passed down through beach clubs, synagogue sisterhoods and kitchen tables, and the players filling the new rooms are as likely to be learning the card for the first time as returning to a game their grandmothers taught them.

Island Park makes a fitting home for the South Shore's entry. The village celebrated its centennial this summer, and its Long Beach Road corridor has been collecting new tenants all year. A storefront where the neighborhood gathers around a table fits the street it landed on.
