Massapequa High School's field hockey team has won the Nassau County championship for the sixth year in a row. The Chiefs beat Port Washington 4-1 on Friday afternoon, October 30, at Cold Spring Harbor High School.
The final
Massapequa came into the Class A final as Nassau's top seed and Port Washington as the No. 2 seed. Port Washington had reached the final by beating East Meadow 2-0 earlier in the week, while Massapequa advanced past Sewanhaka. The Massapequa Athletics department announced the result Friday afternoon, and the Port Washington Athletic Department confirmed the 4-1 score.
Massapequa's athletic department called the win the completion of a six-peat. For Port Washington, the final capped a season in which the Vikings earned the county's second seed and a place in the championship game.
Next: Northport, for Long Island
The Nassau title sends Massapequa to the Long Island Class A championship, where it will meet the Suffolk County champion. That is Northport. The Northport-East Northport School District announced Friday that Grace Fischer scored in double overtime to give the Tigers a 1-0 win over Sachem East and the Suffolk Class A title.
The Long Island final pairs the Nassau and Suffolk champions in each class, and the winner moves on in the New York State public high school tournament. Each school's athletic department posts the game time and site.
A town's fall of titles
Six straight county championships means every senior on this year's roster has won a Nassau title in each of her high school seasons. For Northport, the double-overtime win in the Suffolk final sets up a meeting of the two county champions for the Long Island title.
