Shakespeare comes to Lido Beach the week before Thanksgiving. The Long Beach High School Theater Department is staging Romeo and Juliet in the school auditorium on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 19, 20 and 21, with every performance at 7 p.m. The cast and the crew are all Long Beach students.

The play

Romeo and Juliet is the story of two young people from rival families in Verona, the Montagues and the Capulets, who fall in love in spite of a feud that has turned their city's streets violent. Shakespeare wrote it in the 1590s, and it has been on stages ever since. It is also one of the plays most high school students read in English class, which makes a student production a chance to see the language spoken out loud by people their own age.

For a high school theater program, it is a big undertaking. The play calls for a large cast, staged sword fights, a masked ball, a balcony and some of the most quoted lines in the language, plus the lighting, sets, costumes and sound that a student crew builds and runs night after night.
