Three nights in a row next week, the Cinema Arts Centre on Park Avenue in Huntington pairs a film with something more: a biographer, a filmmaker in person, and the start of a retrospective. Here is the schedule, as the nonprofit theater has posted it.
Sunday, Nov. 8: Cold Turkey, with Norman Lear's biographer
At 2:30 p.m., the Cinema Arts Centre screens Cold Turkey (1971), a satire directed by Norman Lear, the creator of All in the Family. Dick Van Dyke plays a small-town reverend whose town takes up a tobacco tycoon's offer of $25 million to any community that can quit smoking for 30 days. The film runs 99 minutes and is rated PG-13.
After the screening, author Tripp Whetsell leads a discussion built around his book Norman Lear: His Life and Times, which follows Lear's seven decades in television and film. Whetsell is an entertainment journalist and an adjunct media studies professor at Emerson College, and his earlier book is an oral history of the comedy club The Improv. Copies of the Lear biography will be for sale. Tickets are $11 for members and $18 for the public.
Monday, Nov. 9: One Big Happy Family, with Lisa Brenner in person
At 7:30 p.m., screenwriter, producer and star Lisa Brenner presents One Big Happy Family (2025), directed by Matt Sohn, and stays for a Q&A. Brenner plays Rachel Torres, who learns from a DNA test on her 40th birthday, days before her daughter's Bat Mitzvah, that the man who raised her is not her biological father. She and her mother, played by Linda Lavin, go looking for the answer. Tickets are $11 for members and $18 for the public.
Tuesday, Nov. 10: the Peter Weir retrospective begins
At 7:30 p.m., the theater opens a limited series on director Peter Weir with Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003), which runs 138 minutes and is rated PG-13. The Truman Show (1998) and Dead Poets Society (1989) are next in the series, with dates to be posted on the theater's calendar. Tickets are $8 for members and $16 for the public.
The weekend before
The theater's regular series fill the days leading in: a Night Owl Cinema screening of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) on Friday, November 6; a Cult Café showing of Some Kind of Wonderful (1987) on Saturday, November 7; and Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) for Cinema For Kids on Sunday, November 8. Showtimes are on the theater's calendar.
