The basketball training company that runs seven courts in Roslyn has opened its fourth location, and this one it built from scratch. Hoop Lab's new Commack lab at 4 Henry Street is now open, the company's first facility designed from the ground up for the way it teaches the game.
The building holds six mini-courts, one full court for game play and a dedicated turf zone for athletic work, a few minutes off the Long Island Expressway and the Northern State Parkway.
Four players, one coach
The format is the company's signature. Hoop Lab runs semi-private classes that never put more than four players with a coach, grouping kids by age and level, with players starting as young as 4. Every new player gets a trial class and a skills evaluation, and a single membership works at any of the company's labs, which together run more than 20 classes a day.
The Commack coaching staff is led by Nikko Callender, Hoop Lab's general manager, who also coaches at Long Island Lutheran. He is joined by Donasja Scott, a former professional player, and Dee Lancaster, who holds Jr. NBA and USA Basketball coaching credentials.
The lab network
Commack is the fourth lab and the second the company runs as a standalone building. The Roslyn location at 22 and 55 Lumber Road is the largest, with seven courts and an athletic conditioning turf. The other two sit inside Sportime clubs, at 75 Hasket Drive in Syosset and in Wayne, New Jersey.
Roslyn is also where the company runs its invite-only Elite Basketball sessions for high school and college athletes, led by Callender on Court 7 three times a week, Tuesdays and Fridays from 8 to 9:30 p.m. and Sundays from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at $70 a session. The sessions combine high-repetition skill work with strength, speed and vertical training.
What is running this fall
Beyond the regular class schedule, the fall slate includes a four-week Try-Out Prep Intensive, open to members and non-members, along with private one-on-one lessons. Classes at every location are booked through the Hoop Lab app, available for iPhone and Android.
