Riverhead has a new bank on Osborn Avenue. Hanover Community Bank opened a full-service branch at 205 Osborn Avenue this month, the Mineola-based bank's eleventh location overall and its first east of Port Jefferson.

The parent company, Hanover Bancorp, announced the opening on October 6. The branch is the bank's third in Suffolk County, joining its Hauppauge business center and its Port Jefferson branch, and it extends the company's map well past where it stopped before: the rest of its locations sit in Nassau County, Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Freehold, New Jersey.

Why Riverhead

In its announcement, the bank pointed directly at Riverhead's momentum. The company said it looks to grow in communities with strong economic trajectories, and described Riverhead as a market in the middle of a transformation where it sees room to work with local businesses, families, community organizations and public-sector clients.

That reading tracks with the town's recent run. Downtown Riverhead has drawn a wave of redevelopment projects, new apartments and new storefronts over the past few years, and Osborn Avenue sits a short walk from the Main Street corridor where much of that activity is concentrated.

What the branch offers

The Riverhead location doubles as a business banking center. Alongside personal accounts, the branch handles business and municipal banking, and it is staffed with business bankers assigned to work with local companies directly, a structure the bank says is meant to keep lending and service decisions close to the customers they affect.

Hanover Community Bank is a community commercial bank whose products run from checking accounts and residential mortgages to business loans, lines of credit and commercial lending. The bank offers no-fee ATM service, free interest checking and mobile and online banking, and it is a member of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

The bigger picture

For Riverhead, the arrival adds a bank built around local decision-making to a downtown in the middle of a redevelopment run. For Hanover, the move stakes out the East End, a region none of its ten other branches reaches. The company called the branch a milestone in a long-term expansion across Suffolk County and the greater New York area, which suggests Riverhead is not intended to be the end of the line.

The branch is open now at 205 Osborn Avenue. Hours and contact information are listed on the bank's website.
