The new Häagen-Dazs shop at the Sands Shopping Center on Long Beach Road has been scooping quietly all summer. This Saturday it makes things official. The shop has set August 29 for its grand opening celebration, with a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. and festivities running from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the first 500 guests through the door get a free mini scoop. Each of those first 500 also receives a peel-off card with a shot at prizes, the biggest of them a $500 Häagen-Dazs Shops gift card.
For Oceanside, Island Park and Long Beach families staring down the last unscheduled Saturday of summer, that is about as easy as a plan gets.
Open since July, and the neighborhood noticed
The shop at 3567 Long Beach Road opened its doors on July 17, and it did so the old-fashioned way: the owner introduced the business herself in the community groups where Oceanside and Island Park actually talk to each other, describing a locally owned franchise run by a family that wanted to become part of the neighborhood. The case of a global ice cream name arriving via a local family is less unusual than it sounds. Nearly every Häagen-Dazs shop is an independently operated franchise, which means the person behind the counter has considerably more riding on your sundae than a corporation does.
Six weeks in, the neighborhood has rendered a verdict. The shop is holding a 4.9 rating on Google across roughly 150 reviews, with regulars praising the staff by name and the banana splits by photograph. For a scoop shop that opened in the middle of ice cream season, when expectations run highest, that is a strong start.
What the shop serves
The counter carries the full Häagen-Dazs shop lineup: scooped ice cream and sorbet, hand-packed pints, sundaes, shakes and smoothies, plus the signature ice cream cakes the brand builds for birthdays. The shop runs daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., which covers both the after-camp crowd and the after-dinner one.
The brand behind the counter has deeper New York roots than its faux-Danish name lets on. Reuben Mattus, an immigrant who spent decades selling ice cream from his family's operation in the Bronx, created Häagen-Dazs in 1960, inventing the name because it sounded European and put a premium promise on the carton. The first standalone shop opened in Brooklyn in 1976. Whatever the label suggests, this is a New York ice cream story, and a shop on Long Beach Road sits closer to its origins than most of the 900 or so Häagen-Dazs shops around the world.
A busier corner of Long Beach Road
The Sands Shopping Center sits on the stretch of Long Beach Road that everyone between Oceanside and the beach drives, which makes it a natural landing spot for a business that depends on impulse and appetite. The new shop gives the Sands another reason for a family to stop on the way back from the barrier island rather than pushing through the light.
On Long Island more broadly, the Oceanside shop joins Häagen-Dazs locations the company lists in Cedarhurst, Floral Park, Farmingdale, Great Neck and Huntington. The South Shore corridor between the Five Towns and Long Beach has long been a gap in that map. Not anymore.
If you go Saturday
The arithmetic of a first-500 giveaway at a shop this well reviewed is worth taking seriously, because 500 people is not actually very many on a summer Saturday. The ribbon cutting comes first at 10 a.m., the celebration proper starts at 11, and the free mini scoops go to the first 500 guests while the peel-off cards last. If the $500 gift card has your name on it, you will not find out from the parking lot.
Summer on the South Shore always ends the same way, with one last weekend that everyone tries to stretch. This year, at least, it comes with sprinkles.
