East Hampton's movie nights this holiday season cost nothing. Guild Hall is running a slate of free community screenings with the Greater East Hampton Chamber of Commerce under its Feel Good Films banner, and the first one lands this Sunday, November 1, with Mel Brooks's Young Frankenstein closing out Halloween weekend.

Two more follow on the holiday calendar: John Hughes's Planes, Trains and Automobiles on Sunday, November 29, the weekend after Thanksgiving, and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation on Sunday, December 20. All three screen at 7 p.m. at Guild Hall on Main Street in East Hampton, and all three are free, with reservations through Guild Hall's site.

The lineup, one classic per holiday

The programming follows the season. Young Frankenstein, the 1974 Mel Brooks comedy with Gene Wilder leading a spoof of the classic monster movies, takes the Halloween slot. Planes, Trains and Automobiles, the 1987 John Hughes comedy about a chaotic journey home for Thanksgiving, lands on Thanksgiving weekend. Christmas Vacation, the 1989 National Lampoon entry, closes the run five days before Christmas.

Guild Hall's own descriptions pitch the series at the whole community: each is presented as a free community screening with the chamber of commerce as partner.

A night out in the off season

The screenings land in the stretch of the East End calendar when the summer crowds are gone and the village's year-round residents have Main Street to themselves. A free film at the 1931 arts center is the kind of off-season programming that gives a November Sunday somewhere to go.

Guild Hall's galleries are between shows until November 8, when the 86th Artist Members Exhibition opens alongside a Michael A. Butler show, both running into January. The theater, though, is live Sunday night.

Reserving a seat

All three Feel Good Films screenings are free with reservations, made through the individual event pages on Guild Hall's website. Young Frankenstein screens Sunday, November 1 at 7 p.m.; Planes, Trains and Automobiles on Sunday, November 29 at 7 p.m.; and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation on Sunday, December 20 at 7 p.m.
