The room at 257 Main Street that spent the last several years wrapping tacos is now stacking pitas. Greek Table, a fast-casual Mediterranean counter, is open daily in the storefront that was High Tide Taco Bar until the end of the summer, and downtown Farmingdale has a Greek kitchen on its main drag again.

This is not a stranger taking over a lease. Jeff Rumman, the owner who ran High Tide in the same room, is the one behind Greek Table too. The taco bar served its last orders as summer wound down, the space got a quick turnaround, and the counter reopened with tzatziki where the salsa used to be.

Why Greek, and why this block

Main Street has been missing this exact thing. Grecian Grill, the village's longtime souvlaki stop, went dark in the summer of 2023, and it sat two doors down at 261 Main. Since then, Farmingdale's dining strip has added plenty, but a straightforward Greek counter was not part of it, and Rumman has said the neighborhood kept bringing it up. The pivot was less a verdict on tacos than a bet on what the block actually wanted back.

It is worth saying that High Tide was not limping to the finish. The taco bar was voted the best Tex-Mex restaurant on Long Island in the 2023 Bethpage Best of Long Island awards, and it kept a loyal lunch crowd to the end. Swapping a working concept for a missing one is a confident move, and it says something about how sure the owner is that Farmingdale wanted Greek.

What is on the table

The format is order at the counter, built around warm pita. Gyros run $13.95 with your choice of meat, seafood or veggies, and adding a side salad or fries costs little on top. Platters at $21.95 pair a protein with a side salad, two sides and sliced pita, and a build-your-own rice bowl at $16.95 lets you pick two bases, a protein, four toppings and a sauce.

The most original corner of the menu is the pressed pita melts, which read like a Greek diner dreaming about grilled cheese. There is a spanakopita melt that folds spinach, feta and herbs into crisp pita, a beef gyro and fig melt that pairs the meat with sweet fig spread, and a gyro cheesesteak melt with caramelized onions and peppers. All of them come with fries or a house salad.

Starters cover the expected dips, hummus, tzatziki and spicy feta, along with Greek nachos piled on pita chips, lemon pepper wings served with tzatziki, fried zucchini chips and a proper spanakopita. Dessert leans sweet and sticky: baklava, Greek donuts, and a cheesecake baklava that merges the two best things on the table. There is a kids menu, and everything on it comes with fries.

The lunch move

The sharpest deal in the room is the weekday lunch special, a warm pita stuffed with gyro beef, gyro chicken or falafel plus a side for $14.95, served from noon to 3. Main Street fills up at midday with village workers, shoppers and students, and that price puts Greek Table squarely in the daily rotation rather than the special occasion column.

The restaurant is open daily, with the kitchen running to 9 at night, and ordering runs through the counter or online. The phone number is 516-249-4528.

A Main Street that keeps reinventing itself

Farmingdale's downtown has been one of the busiest reinvention stories on Long Island this year, with new names taking over familiar rooms up and down the strip. Greek Table is the version of that story readers seem to like best: a local owner reading his own block, retiring one idea and opening the next one in the same room, without the storefront ever sitting empty.

For anyone who spent years ordering souvlaki at Grecian Grill and never found a replacement, the wait is over, and it landed almost exactly where the old one stood. The gyros are back on Main Street. They just came with a new address and a fig melt.
