Great Neck closes out its fall season on the waterfront this weekend. The Great Neck Park District's Harvest Festival and Family Fireworks Celebration runs Sunday, November 1 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Steppingstone Park, ending with a fireworks show over the park at 6 p.m.

Admission is free with a valid Great Neck Park District Park Card, and the district requires advance event tickets, available through the event's online ticket link on the park district's site. The afternoon is built as a full day out: rides and games across the park, a continuous music schedule on the stage, and a row of food trucks running into the evening.

What is on the field

The activity list covers the fall-festival canon and then some: pony rides, hay rides, a hay maze, a petting zoo, inflatables, a rock wall, Grit Ninja obstacles, balloon artists and face painting. The district notes the lineup is subject to change, but the scale is set for a full afternoon rather than a quick walk-through.

The music runs continuously. Kelli Baker opens at 2 p.m., the Brass Animals take the stage at 3:15, and ALL REVVED UP, a Meat Loaf tribute band, plays the 4:15 slot. A DJ carries the party from 5:15 through the fireworks.

Food trucks and a toast at sunset

The food lineup leans local: Vinny's Wood-Fired Pizza, Chiddy's Cheesesteaks, The Shrimpy Truck, YAAAS Tea, The Big Bite Bakery, plus Rita's Italian Ice and Frozen Custard, Mister Softee and Good Humor for dessert in any weather. Two beverage vendors, Sips with Vash and My Mobile Bar, will pour for guests 21 and older.

The fireworks begin at 6 p.m. over Steppingstone Park, the district's waterfront park at the north end of the Great Neck peninsula, which puts the show over the water as the park goes dark.

Getting there

Parking at Steppingstone is limited, and the district runs its Parkwood Shuttle continuously to the park from the upper and lower parking lots at Parkwood, starting at 1:30 p.m. Riding the shuttle in is the district's recommended route for festival afternoons.

The Harvest Festival caps a season of large-scale programming for the park district, which publishes its full fall and winter catalog of programs, pool and tennis center activities on its site. For Sunday, the practical details are simple: a Park Card and an advance ticket get a family in, the field opens at 2, and the sky lights up at 6.
