Farmingdale's Main Street has its November mapped out. The Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce has scheduled a ribbon cutting for a new women's clothing shop on Friday, November 6, a Veterans Day ceremony on the Village Green on Wednesday, November 11, and its annual holiday parade on Saturday, November 21, the event the chamber uses to open what it calls Small Business Season.
All three are free to attend, and all three sit on or just off the same stretch of Main Street between Northside Elementary School and the Village Green at 361 Main Street.
Rachel's Treasures opens at 337 Main Street
The newest storefront on the strip is Rachel's Treasures, a women's clothing and accessories shop at 337 Main Street. The chamber will hold a ribbon cutting for its grand opening at 5 p.m. on Friday, November 6, and has invited village officials, chamber members and residents to come by.
The chamber describes the shop as a curated women's apparel and accessories boutique carrying clothing chosen to be stylish, current and comfortable. For information, the shop can be reached at (917) 468-9903.
The ribbon cutting comes two weeks before the chamber's holiday parade, which opens the downtown's Small Business Season.
Veterans Day on the Village Green
At 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11, Farmingdale's Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 516 and the village's American Legion post will hold a ceremony on the Farmingdale Village Green to honor people who served in the United States Armed Forces. The posts have invited the whole community.
The hour and date mark the armistice that ended fighting in World War I at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. The day was first observed as Armistice Day, when returning soldiers marched in hometown parades, and today honors veterans of every war.
The parade that opens Small Business Season
The month's largest event on Main Street is the chamber's annual holiday parade on Saturday, November 21. It steps off at noon from Northside Elementary School, 55 Powell Place, and heads south down Main Street to the Village Green. It runs rain or shine.
The lineup includes a Farmingdale Public Schools marching band, the Dalerettes kickline and Hardscrabble Girl Scouts in holiday costume, and chamber members are invited to march with their banners. At the Village Green, Santa will hand out candy canes and pose for photos with children, so families who want a holiday picture should bring a camera. The chamber credits Farmingdale Public Schools and the Farmingdale Fire Department for their help with the event, and Dr. Walter Priestley of Priestley Chiropractic for playing Santa.
Farmingdale promotes a full Small Business Season rather than a single Small Business Saturday, on the idea that one day of shopping local is not enough for a downtown. As part of the season, the chamber's Small Business Season Committee will film short videos of member businesses at the Farmingdale Public Library on November 18 and 20 and share them on the chamber's social media through the holiday shopping weeks.
