For the first time in 23 years, the Farmingdale High School girls swim and dive team is a division champion. The Dalers finished first of ten teams at the Nassau County division championship meet at the Eisenhower Park Aquatic Center, scoring 637 points, according to the Farmingdale School District.
A first of two kinds
The title is the program's first division championship since 2003. The district notes a second first as well: it is the first time in school history that the team has won a championship-format meet.
Who won what
Two event wins led the scoring. Avery Schuhmacher won the 1-meter diving competition, and the 200-yard freestyle relay of Julia Fiore, Maggie Kelly, Kaylee JeanBaptiste and Julia Busch touched first.
Depth carried the rest. Farmingdale placed four entrants in the top ten in each of the 50 freestyle, the 1-meter dive and the 100 breaststroke. Maeve O'Keefe swam a county-qualifying time in the 200 individual medley, and Lucy Cutter, Mackenzie Fitzpatrick, Kaitlyn Thurston and Kailey McGuigan all dropped significant time.
Coach Ken Ilchuck credited the work of the team's seniors in particular and called the title a step forward for the program, according to the district's announcement.
