Long Island knows what it built. Aircraft in Bethpage. The Lunar Module. Ducks, potatoes, wine on the North Fork. The list gets recited often enough that it has the rhythm of a hymn.

Almost nobody puts the moisturizer on it.

The Estee Lauder Companies, the group behind Estee Lauder, Clinique, La Mer, MAC, Origins, Aveda and a couple of dozen other names you would recognize on a shelf, runs its research and development operation out of Melville. Not a satellite office. The labs. Skin care, makeup, body, fragrance, basic science and advanced technologies, all of it, on Long Island. The company says it has been here more than 55 years, with hundreds of scientists, engineers, product developers and technical professionals based at the campus.

Which means that the thing in the small glass bottle on your counter, whatever it cost, was very likely argued over, reformulated and tested about fifteen minutes from wherever you are reading this.

What actually happens in there

The public imagines beauty as a marketing business with a factory attached. The org chart says otherwise. Getting a serum from an idea to a shelf is a chain of unglamorous technical problems: does the active ingredient stay stable at the pH the skin will tolerate, does the emulsion separate in a hot car, does the preservative system hold, does the fragrance shift as it ages, and can any of it be proven rather than merely claimed.

That last one has its own address. The company operates a Clinical Research Center where studies are run to validate product performance, reachable at a 631 number, which is a small and pleasing detail: the phone number for one of the world's largest beauty research operations is a Suffolk County exchange.

It is also a field that has quietly become one of the better arguments against the stereotype of who does science. All of the company's research and development labs worldwide are led by women, and more than half of its scientists, engineers and technical professionals are women. In an industry that spent a century selling to women and being run by men, the laboratory is where that inverted first.

The Farmingdale pipeline

The more interesting Long Island development is what the company did with the two miles between Melville and Farmingdale.

The Estee Lauder Companies leases roughly 52,000 square feet of laboratory and office space at Broad Hollow Bioscience Park, which sits on the Farmingdale State College campus. It expanded the company's research capacity. It also put a global beauty R&D operation physically on the grounds of a SUNY college, which is a different kind of opportunity for the students walking past it.

A strategic alliance between the company and Farmingdale State was announced in the fall of 2022. By the spring of 2023, the first cohort of six FSC students had completed a year of applied learning inside the company's labs, working in microbiology, business continuity and special analytical services. The company has also hosted a "Green Chemistry in the Lab" session for students, faculty and staff, walking through sustainable formulation practice and how raw materials get chosen.

"Applied learning is an important part of Farmingdale's mission," the college's provost, Dr. Laura Joseph, said of the partnership. Lisa Napolione, the company's senior vice president of global research and development, called the applied learning program an example of powerful impact.

Corporate quotes are corporate quotes. The structure underneath this one is real, and it is rare. A Long Island student can now do undergraduate lab work inside a global R&D operation without leaving their own campus, in an industry that is hiring, in a building their tuition did not have to build.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Long Island has spent forty years worrying about the same thing: the young people leave. They go to school here, and then the interesting technical work is somewhere else, so they are somewhere else too.

The counter to that is not a slogan. It is a specific employer, doing specific technical work, within driving distance of a specific college, with a formal path between the two. That is what a cluster is, and Long Island has one in beauty science that almost nobody outside it can name.

Ask a room of Long Islanders what gets researched and developed on this island and you will hear aerospace, defense, medicine. All true, all worth the pride. The next time the list goes around, it is fair to add the bottle on the bathroom shelf.
