The days are shorter, and Saint James has a fixed point on the calendar for it. Enology Wine Bar & Bistro, the wine bar and kitchen at 412 North Country Road, has posted its schedule all the way into April: live music every Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., with a rotating cast of five performers, and one Saturday afternoon class in November that takes on the wines of Germany and Austria.

Saturday, November 14: Germany and Austria, and not just Riesling

The headline of the season is A Saturday Afternoon with Germany and Austria, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The premise is a fair challenge to anyone who thinks of German wine as one grape. Riesling is on the map, but the class pours six wines from two countries that grow a good deal more than that: the peppery snap of Grüner Veltliner, Weissburgunder and Silvaner, Spätburgunder (which is Pinot Noir by its German name), and Blaufränkisch, a red that seems built for the dinner table.

The thread running through all six is cool climate and steep vineyards, which tends to produce wines with high acidity, light body and real clarity. It is a good subject for November, when menus turn to roasts, mushrooms and braises and a wine that can cut through them earns its place.

The format matches every Enology class: ninety minutes, six pours, a guide who explains why each bottle made the cut, and no wrong questions. Seats are $69 per guest for the class and the wine, or $89 with an individual cheese plate. Seats are limited and are booked through OpenTable.

Thursday nights, 6 to 8 p.m., through April

The music is the steady part of the calendar. Every Thursday set runs from 6 to 8 p.m., the sort of early evening music that sits beside a glass rather than over it, and there is no cover. The rotation draws on five names who have become regulars in the room: Nick Picarella, Emy McB, Greg Antonelli, Austin Merullo and Mark Hubbard. Here is the full lineup as posted.

The calendar skips the last week of November and the two weeks around Christmas and New Year's, so there is no set on Thanksgiving, December 24 or December 31. The room is small, and a Thursday table tends to fill, so reserve ahead if you plan to eat through the music.
