Northport's Main Street theater is about to trade a blue polo for green fur. Dear Evan Hansen, the Tony Award winning musical that has held the John W. Engeman Theater's main stage since September 10, plays its final performances this weekend, closing Sunday, October 25. Eighteen days later, the theater opens its holiday production: How the Grinch Stole Christmas runs November 12 through December 27 at 250 Main Street.
Last chance for Evan Hansen
The Engeman's fall production has run close to seven weeks, and this weekend is the end of the line. Tickets for the remaining performances are available through the theater's box office at 631-261-2900 and at engemantheater.com. The theater notes that it can only stand behind tickets bought directly, not through resellers.
Then comes the Grinch
The holiday slot belongs to the musical built from the Dr. Seuss story, with a book and lyrics by Timothy Mason and music by Mel Marvin. The show carries the songs the story is known for, including You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch and Welcome Christmas, and it is told through the eyes of Max the Dog, who narrates the Grinch's scheme against Whoville and what undoes it.
The run covers the whole holiday season, opening November 12 and playing through December 27, which puts its final week between Christmas and the new year.
Planning a family trip
Main Stage shows at the Engeman are open to theatergoers 4 and older, which makes the Grinch the house's family centerpiece for the season. The box office at 250 Main Street is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on show nights.
For anyone planning past the holidays, the theater sells season tickets starting at $399, which include two special event vouchers, and its special events calendar continues through the fall with a comedy night on Tuesday, November 17.
The handoff gives Northport a stage without a dark month this season: a farewell weekend for the musical that filled the fall, then six weeks of the Grinch on Main Street.
