The East Hampton Historical Society has three dates on its November calendar, and together they cover the village from its 18th-century woodworking shops to its 19th-century artist studio to its private historic homes. The month ends with the 38th annual East Hampton House & Garden Tour on Saturday, Nov. 28, a benefit that the society says regularly sells out.

Nov. 14: the Dominy shops and Hook Mill

On Saturday, Nov. 14, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the society and Preservation Long Island lead a tour of the Dominy Shops Museum at 73 North Main Street. The museum preserves the 18th-century woodworking shops of the Dominy family of East Hampton craftsmen. Preservationist Bob Hefner leads the tour, pointing out original Dominy pieces from the society's collection and explaining the site's recent restoration.

The group then walks to Hook Mill, the windmill Nathaniel Dominy V built in 1806. Admission is $20, with registration through Preservation Long Island.

Nov. 22: the Moran home and studio

On Sunday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m., the society opens the Thomas and Mary Nimmo Moran Home & Studio at 229 Main Street for a guided tour. The Morans were painters and printmakers whose work in the late 19th century shaped how Americans pictured nature, the American West in particular. The tour covers how the building served as their home, their studio and a place to entertain, and visitors can also walk through on their own.

For the day, the studio displays Thomas Moran's painting Ulysses Deriding Polyphemus the way he hung it there himself. Tickets are $12 for nonmembers and free for Historical Society members.

Nov. 28: the 38th House & Garden Tour

The tour runs Saturday, Nov. 28, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., two days after Thanksgiving, and opens private historic East Hampton homes to ticket holders. The night before, Friday, Nov. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m., a cocktail party is held at a historic private home.

  • House tour only: $125 per person. The society lists the $125 price for tickets bought before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25.
  • Tour and cocktail party: packages start at $375 for one of each, with sponsor levels of $750, $1,750, $2,500 and $5,000.

The tour is a benefit for the society. Its sponsor levels are tied to specific work: caring for the historic buildings on the society's six properties, field trips and programs for local schoolchildren, and conservation supplies for the artifact collection.
