Döner Haus, the restaurant chain that serves döner the way it is sold on the street in Germany, is coming to Nassau County. The company's locations page lists its Wantagh restaurant at 3336 Jerusalem Avenue with an opening date of Thursday, November 13.
What a döner is
The döner is the sandwich that grew up in Berlin's Turkish neighborhoods and became one of Germany's most common street foods. Meat is stacked and roasted on a vertical spit, shaved off in thin pieces and stuffed into a pocket of pide, a Turkish flatbread, with vegetables and sauce.
At Döner Haus, the sandwich comes in a toasted pide pocket with red cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and a garlic sauce. Diners pick chicken, beef or a mix of the two. The company says all of its meat is zabiha halal, organic and free of fillers, and that the meats are gluten-free.
Sandwiches, boxes and wraps
The menu is built on the same fillings served three ways:
- Döner sandwiches, in the pide pocket.
- Döner boxes, with the meat over fries, or over salad for a lower-carb plate that the company puts at close to 50 grams of protein.
- Döner wraps, the same fillings rolled in a grilled tortilla.
The house fries, called Haus Fries, are the side. Döner Haus runs a rewards program that gives one point for every dollar spent, with $5 off for every 50 points.
From Queens to Nassau
The chain's open restaurants are in Queens and Manhattan: Astoria, Bayside, Sunnyside, the East Village and Hell's Kitchen. It also has a restaurant in Los Angeles and lists future locations in White Plains, West Palm Beach and Oxford, Mississippi.
Wantagh is the first of two Nassau County restaurants on the chain's map. A second, in Garden City Park, is listed as coming soon, with no address or date posted yet. For South Shore diners, the Bayside restaurant on Bell Boulevard had been the closest option until now.
Where it is
The new restaurant is on Jerusalem Avenue in Wantagh, the main north-south road that runs through the hamlet toward Wantagh Parkway and Sunrise Highway. The Wantagh store's phone number on the company's site is 516-845-9735.
