The nor'easter took a lot off Long Island's calendar last weekend. This Saturday, one of the biggest casualties comes back. Car Show Long Island's TOBAY Beach Fall Classic, the largest car show on the Island, runs Saturday, October 3 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at TOBAY Beach on Ocean Parkway, and walking in costs nothing.

What actually shows up

Calling it a classic car show undersells it. The Town of Oyster Bay, which stages the event, expects hundreds of vehicles on the lot: vintage and antique cars, muscle cars, hot rods, imports, electric cars, trucks, military vehicles and emergency service vehicles, all parked on pavement in a dedicated show area you can wander for hours. Regulars describe finishing one row of cars and realizing there are still rows they have not seen, everything from Model Ts to monster trucks.

Trophies go to the best in class across categories including Classic, Modern, Muscle, Original and Hot Rod, with the awards handed out after the show. Kids get a real vote too: the Kids' Choice Award is decided by the children walking the rows, which means somewhere on the lot a very serious eight-year-old will be making somebody's whole month.

More afternoon than car show

The town has built the day out well past the vehicles. A live band plays through the afternoon, a Food Truck Corral handles lunch, and vendor rows bring the kind of browsing that keeps the half of the family that did not come for the cars happy. All of it sits against the ocean at TOBAY, which in early October usually means warm light, a breeze off the water and none of the summer beach crowds.

Spectator admission is free, and because the show lands after beach season, there is no parking sticker or day pass required to drive into TOBAY. That detail matters: TOBAY is a Town of Oyster Bay resident beach all summer, and this is one of the few days of the year the gates are simply open to everyone, Nassau or Suffolk, resident or not.

Go early, and know the shuttle trick

The show's own guidance is blunt about one thing: past editions have hit capacity, and once the lot is full, nobody else gets in. Spectator gates open at 11 a.m., and arriving close to that hour is the safest play. The event also runs free shuttle parking from Jones Beach Field 5, which regulars swear by as the way to skip the Ocean Parkway backup entirely: park at the field, ride the shuttle in, and spend the sitting-in-traffic hour looking at cars instead.

TOBAY Beach sits on Ocean Parkway about four miles east of Jones Beach, just west of Gilgo. Typing TOBAY Beach into any navigation app gets you there. One town rule to know before you load the car: pets are not allowed at TOBAY, with the exception of registered service animals, so this is a day the dog sits out.

If your car is the show

Owners who want to be on the other side of the rope can still register, online through the show's site at carshowli.com or by mail. Show cars can arrive from 8 a.m. to set up before the 11 a.m. start, and the town asks that entries stay through 4 p.m. so the lot does not break up mid-show. The same capacity warning applies twice over for entrants: the show field has filled before, and an early arrival is the difference between showing your car and turning it around on Ocean Parkway.

The storm tax, refunded

Last weekend's nor'easter flooded South Shore roads, canceled events across both counties and postponed nearly everything planned within reach of the water, this show included. The reschedule is the rare storm story with a clean ending: Long Island's biggest car show gets its afternoon at the beach after all, one week late. If the weekend plans the storm washed out left a hole in your October, this is a strong way to fill the first Saturday of the month.
