A storefront on West Main Street in Patchogue Village has spent months waiting on its next tenant. It has one now, and it is a name the village already knows. Burgerology is coming back to Patchogue.
The burger company, which runs six restaurants across Long Island and Manhattan, has confirmed on its own channels that it is returning to the village at 76 West Main Street, the address most recently held by Spycoast Kitchen. There is no opening date yet. What there is instead is a hiring date, and it lands this week.
Open interviews Wednesday and Thursday
Burgerology is running open interviews at 76 West Main Street on Wednesday, October 14 and Thursday, October 15. Each day splits into two blocks: 10:30 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon, then 5 until 8 in the evening. No appointment is necessary. Anyone walking in is asked to bring a resume.
The company is hiring across the whole building, front of house and back of house both, which is the shape a restaurant's hiring takes when it is staffing a room from zero rather than filling a few gaps. For anyone in Patchogue, Blue Point, East Patchogue or Medford who has been waiting on a kitchen job to open up within walking distance of the village, this is a week to pay attention to.
It also tells you roughly where the project stands. A restaurant does not interview for every position in the house unless the room itself is close to ready. A November opening is the reasonable read, though the company has not put a date on it, and anyone planning around one should wait for Burgerology to say so.
This is a return, not an arrival
Burgerology has run a Patchogue restaurant before. That is what gives this one its weight. A chain opening its seventh location is a business story. A chain going back into a village it had already left is something else, and it is the kind of thing Long Islanders tend to notice, because the usual direction of travel on a village main street runs the other way.
The new address is a different one from the restaurant the company kept here previously, which means this is not a lease being resumed. It is a second attempt at the same village from a different corner of it, and West Main Street puts Burgerology deeper into the walkable stretch of Patchogue than before.
What the chain actually is
Burgerology describes itself as a modern American restaurant built around invention rather than nostalgia, and it brands itself on the idea that flavor is something you engineer. In practice that means stacked burgers built on prime beef, house sauces, artisan toppings, and a long tail of things that are not burgers at all.
The menu runs from brunch through lunch, happy hour and dinner. Alongside the burgers there are hand cut fries and loaded fries, mac and cheese, wings, poutine, onion rings, steaks, pastas, power bowls, sandwiches, salads, shakes, cocktails and desserts. The kitchen works from scratch and the company caters.
The existing restaurants sit in Stony Brook, Farmingdale, Massapequa, Rockville Centre, Huntington and Midtown Manhattan. The Farmingdale location, at 247 to 249 Main Street, is the clearest template for what a village main street version of this looks like: a full restaurant on a downtown block rather than a counter in a shopping center.
What it means for the village
Patchogue has spent a decade becoming the kind of downtown people drive to rather than through, and the measure of whether that holds is not how many restaurants open but how many come back. Storefront turnover on a main street is normal. A business choosing the same village twice is a judgment about the village.
It is worth noting what Burgerology is walking into. West Main Street carries a different kind of foot traffic than the blocks nearer the rail line, closer to the theater, the bars and the stretch people actually stroll on a Friday night. A burger restaurant with a full bar menu and a brunch service is built for exactly that block.
For a reader, the practical version is simpler. There is a burger restaurant coming to West Main Street, it is hiring everybody this week, and the room behind the paper is further along than most projects you hear about this early. If you want to work there, the door is open Wednesday and Thursday. If you want to eat there, watch the windows.
