The Town of Brookhaven is turning its animal shelter into a fall festival for an afternoon. BarkFest runs Sunday, November 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter at 300 Horseblock Road, and the point of the party is introductions: more than 100 dogs are currently living at the shelter while they wait for homes.

What the day looks like

Town Supervisor Daniel J. Panico announced the event in late October. Visitors can meet the shelter's adoptable dogs and cats, talk with the staff who care for them and walk through how the adoption process works, from the first meeting to the ride home. The afternoon adds a local radio station on site, free raffles, a door prize and activities aimed at families.

Shirley Feed & Pet is sponsoring the event, which is free to attend. Nobody has to arrive intending to adopt: the town is encouraging residents to come out for the festivities, learn what the shelter does and see the animals, with the understanding that some of those meetings turn into something more.

A shelter at capacity pressure

The number that sits under the event is the one worth knowing. The town says more than 100 dogs are at the Horseblock Road shelter right now, each of them fed, walked and cared for by staff while they wait. The supervisor's announcement makes the arithmetic plain: shelter care is a bridge, not a destination, and events like this one exist to shorten the wait.

For a family that has been circling the idea of a dog or a cat, the afternoon is built for questions: the staff is assembled, the animals are out and meeting people, and the adoption process can start on the spot.
