The last piece between Riverhead's most recognizable front porch and its next restaurant fell into place on Thursday. As of August 27, the bar at Abigayle's, the restaurant taking over the circa 1905 Preston House at 428 East Main Street, can legally pour, with Labor Day a week and a half out. The restaurant runs under JHG Concepts Inc., the company the owners formed for the project.

A North Fork name moves into downtown Riverhead

Abigayle's belongs to Patricia and James Mangiacapre, the husband and wife who run Watershed Kitchen and Inn in South Jamesport. The Watershed built a following on the North Fork for exactly the kind of cooking Abigayle's promises to bring west into downtown Riverhead: seasonal, personal and hard to pin to a single tradition. Executive chef Jorge Aparicio leads the kitchen, and the menu draws on both sides of the family, Patricia's Dominican heritage and James's Italian roots, folded into globally inspired dishes.

The building they picked is not just another storefront. The Preston House dates to around 1905 and stands as one of downtown Riverhead's most photographed landmarks, a grand old house with a wraparound porch that survived a century of Main Street changing around it. A renovation completed in 2019 preserved the historic bones and paired the house with the modern Preston Hotel next door. The restaurant space inside most recently held Myles on Main, and it has been waiting for a new tenant since that chapter ended.

Three floors, a porch and a late night downstairs

The plans for Abigayle's use the whole house. The main floor holds the dining room, a bar and porch dining out front, the kind of seat that sells itself on an August evening on East Main. The second floor is set aside for private events. Downstairs, the owners plan a cocktail lounge with couches, DJ music and late night bites, a rare offering in a downtown where most kitchens close early. Lunch, dinner and event hosting round out the schedule, and the design, by LUMBER + Salt, leans on shiplap walls, rich wood tones and hanging ferns.

And the name. Abigayle is the Mangiacapres' Yorkshire terrier, a small dog now attached to a large building. The couple has said the name fits the welcoming spirit they built the Watershed on, and whatever else it does, it guarantees the restaurant a mascot.

Ready ahead of the weekend

The bar coming online now is worth a moment, because it is the difference between a full opening and a preview of one. JHG Concepts, a Suffolk corporation formed in April, has been building toward this since early July, working with the Preston Hotel next door as part of one hospitality operation. As of August 27 the taps are live, with runway that stretches deep into the winter. For a restaurant, opening with a bar rather than without one is the difference between the full concept and a rehearsal of it.

The timing is not an accident

The Mangiacapres have been pointing at this weekend since early summer. Soft opening evenings ran through the season while the couple tuned the room, and the stated target for a full opening has been the stretch around Labor Day, which falls on September 7 this year. A bar that switches on in the last days of August, with the season's final big weekend still ahead, lands about as close to on schedule as a restaurant opening gets.

For Riverhead, the timing means East Main Street gets its landmark back in working order just as the town's long downtown rebuild keeps adding reasons to walk it. The aquarium end of Main Street has carried downtown foot traffic for years. A destination dining room with a porch, a bar and a late night lounge pulls some of that gravity east.

For anyone who has driven past the Preston House for years and wondered when someone would light it up again, the answer now has a name, a chef and a working bar. The porch seats will not stay empty for long.
