New CDC Mask, Vaccination, and Restaurant Guidelines Announced for New Yorkers

On April 27, 2021, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced new mask guidelines, which were quickly adopted by New York state.

The new measures signify effective vaccination rollout by the CDC. The most notable and perhaps most anticipated change is their new guidance policy that face coverings outdoors will no longer be necessary for vaccinated individuals, so long as it is not a crowded event.

The CDC also provided information on the many scenarios in which a vaccinated or unvaccinated person may or may not need a mask. For vaccinated individuals, outdoor exercise, small outdoor gatherings with fully vaccinated individuals, and outdoor dining without a mask is on the table. It should be noted that indoor activities still require masks.

While New York City officials are still attempting to dissect the CDC’s information and find out what works best for them, non-crowded outdoor activity on Long Island should be fine for those who are vaccinated and do not wish to wear a mask.

Following this news, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that on May 17, outdoor dining curfews for bars and restaurants will be lifted. He also announced that indoor curfew restrictions will be lifted on May 31.

Additionally, it is now possible for individuals 16 years or older to go to a state-run vaccination site without an appointment. These walk-ins will begin as early as Thursday, April 28.
