Established in 2019, Prohibition in Port Jefferson has brought along with it one of the most unique menus on Long Island. This extends from their food to a plentiful variety of cocktails that have been impressing LI residents both near and far.

We discussed the restaurant’s origins with Prohibition President Lisa Harris, as well as what is currently in the works for the charming establishment.

When asked why Prohibition opened its doors in Port Jefferson specifically, Harris, a Port Jefferson resident, had nothing but glowing testimonial for the village.

“In my opinion, there is no better location that satisfied the tourist market and the blossoming food scene Long Island has to offer,” she said. “It’s so beautiful here and people flock to our village to support the restaurants and retail businesses.”

Prohibition opened its doors officially in April of 2019, and was an immediate buzzworthy locale, with residents welcoming it with open arms for its style and eclectic eats. Its delicious and fun signature cocktails have also been huge hits.

“It’s my opinion that Prohibition offers some of the most unique, over-the-top food on Long Island,” said Harris.

This is evident from their menu, which offers dishes both large and small. This mix of food genres has allowed Prohibition to appeal to a vast audience. From the Dirty Mother Clucker, a Southern fried chicken dish with a sweet glazed donut to Mac & Cheese egg rolls, the menu is expressive, certainly creative, and with much to explore.

A major part of Prohibition is also their inventive cocktails, none of which would be possible without alcohol, which is sourced from Long Island. Locally sourced methods, mentioned Harris, were important to her and decided on from the beginning.

“It’s always been my business model and plan to partner with small-batch and local Long Island producers,” Harris explained. Having once owned a small cookie manufacturer, she relied on local support and felt by sourcing locally herself she was repaying that support.

Cocktails, which start at $13 on their summer menu, include delectable options such as their Blueberry Lavender Margarita and Strawberry Rhubarb Paloma. At Prohibition they are “always shaking things up,” Harris noted, adding, “We change our menu seasonally.”

As Prohibition continues to see support from the Port Jefferson community and Long Islanders everywhere, the restaurant is entering into new territory with several projects in the works. BYOG Wine Bar, coming to Port Jefferson, will be featuring food made by Prohibition.

As for other ventures, Harris mentioned the recently opened Prohibition at East Beach. There, the Prohibition team “Revitalized the long-time shuttered beach concession at East Beach, serving authentic tacos at the beach to our Port Jefferson Residents.”

Prohibition can be found at 115 Main St., Port Jefferson. Prohibition at East Beach, however, can be found at the East Beach concession stand on Village Beach Road. You can learn more about Prohibition on their website, and visit their Facebook for updates.
