Southampton Indigenous Perspectives Canoe Tour on June 19 🛶
The Long Island Indigenous Perspectives Canoe Tour, hosted by the Southampton History Museum, will be held on June 19. The event, which is set to launch from Conscience Point, will cover the oral histories of local Indigenous peoples.
The Indigenous Perspective Paddle Tour will be led by Chenae Bullock of Moskehtu Consulting, an Indigenous-owned cultural and heritage consulting service. Throughout the tour, oral histories will be discussed, such as that of Indigenous plant identification, and even Indigenous songs will be shared.
Conscience Point was chosen for the tour’s launch point for its significance as it was there that English colonists first arrived in 1640 and made contact with the Shinnecock. Paddlers, especially those bringing their own kayaks or canoes, should arrive at 8:15 a.m. for unloading. The tour itself will begin at 9 a.m.
The tour will take travelers down waterways once used by the Indigenous People of Long Island. While it is encouraged to bring your own canoe or kayak, rentals will be provided by the East End Explorer. Asides from tickets, which cost $40 per person and are free for kids under 12, vessel rentals begin at $60 depending on size.
Those interested should RSVP by 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 17. The tour will last from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Learn more about this event, and plenty of others offered by the Southampton History Museum on their website.
