By now, you’ve likely come across local brand Laurel’s Butter at your favorite supermarket, farmers’ market, coffee shop or bagel shop, or even Amazon, and for good reason.
Owner Laurel Shortell has taken Long Island and beyond by storm with her equally nutritious and delicious nut butters.
Shortell got her start in the realm of health while pursuing her bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from the University of Rhode Island, which she completed while competing as a Division I track athlete. She followed up with her master's degree in physical education from Adelphi University, and also competed as a IFBB professional figure bodybuilder.
Not only is Laurel’s Butter a woman-owned business, but it also proudly sports an all-female team of employees. Shortell takes pride in her work as a full time business owner and a mother of two.
“Finding a balance between the two is definitely a challenge, but I wouldn't change a thing. I am able to have my children grow up seeing and knowing what hard work is and what it takes to run a business,” she said.
Laurel’s Butter offers nut butters in a variety of flavors such as standard, peanut, cashew, sunflower and almond butters, as well as more unique selections like Dark Chocolate Sunflower Butter, Honey Crunch Peanut Butter, Vanilla Espresso Almond Butter, and much more. Accompanying the normal selection is an ever-changing list of seasonal flavors. Current seasonal selections include Iced Lemon Poppy Seed and Carrot Cake flavors. Shortell’s personal favorites include the seasonal Blueberry Pancake, Carrot Cake, Rainbow Cookie Butter flavors, and year-round Honey Crunch Peanut Butter, Dark Chocolate Almond Butter and Natural Peanut Butter.
You can try a few butters at a time with a variety of sample packs and gift baskets. The Laurel’s Butter website offers other items as well, along with an entire page of recipes to choose from.
“I feel as though health and food go hand and hand. I try to share with people the importance of overall health and teaching people how to include Laurel’s Butter in their everyday daily food intake.” Shortell said. “There are so many different options of using Laurel’s Butter such as over oatmeal, in smoothies, on fruit, baking with it, the list goes on. Besides our nut butters we also make our own protein bites and have our own line of organic whey protein powder!”
Shortell plans to continue her pursuit of producing clean, healthy and delicious butters for her customers to enjoy, and grow her brand into a household name.
“Laurel's Butter will continue to produce optimal products using the freshest and cleanest ingredients. We will continue to grow as a company organically-- everyone will know that flexing peanut girl one day!” she said.
“We want Laurel's Butter to be a familiar brand name in everyone's cabinet. Laurel's Butter has fantastic tasting nut butters and products, and we are a small woman-owned company that cares about the sustainability of our raw materials and puts love into making all of our products for all of our customers.”
