10 of Long Island’s Favorite Breweries
Long Island has seen an uptick in breweries popping up in recent years.
Quality, hand-crafted brews are winning the hearts of beer-lovers all over the Island. These breweries, many of which source locally and are heavily involved in their communities celebrated American Craft Beer Week from May 10 through May 16.
We aim to highlight some of the Island’s favorites. From the well-established to small breweries with raving fanbases, these unique and thriving businesses are some of the best around.
1. Garvies Point Craft Brewery: Garvies Point Brewery has been a Glen Cove favorite since it opened its doors in 2016. The industrial waterfront brewery has eight rotating beers on tap that can be enjoyed, according to them, “just feet away from where they were brewed.”
Garvies Point sources their hops and grains globally, using these ingredients to create fan favorites like their “Wunderkind IPA” and their flavorful, appropriately named “Juice Break IPA.” The brewery is also host to plenty of events in which they partner with food trucks and local businesses.

2. Barrier Brewing: Barrier Brewing in Oceanside yielded their first public beer batches in 2010. They have since moved to a larger facility, and have braced through very trying events. Through damage caused by Hurricane Sandy and the current global pandemic, Barrier Brewing has continued to thrive, upgrading their production and distributing throughout Long Island and various states.
They distribute through bottles, cans, and more, with some notable brands of theirs being their Russian imperial stout “Morticia” and their “Kapow IPA.”

3. Great South Bay Brewery: Great South Bay Brewery in Bay Shore is chock full of award-winning ales and lagers. They have been in operation since 2009, and continue to serve both locals and others attracted to the popular, maritime-themed spot.
Notable beers of theirs include their “HOPSital Heroes” which made in partnership with South Shore University Hospital in order to honor medical workers during the pandemic.

4. 27A Brewing Company: Lindenhurst has a long history with breweries as home to one of the Island’s first, but that has been a long-since closed establishment. Decades without a brewery followed, but the arrival of 27A Brewing Company revitalized a dried local industry. We have written more about 27A Brewing here.
This promising brewery was opened in 2019 by a local couple, Ryan Cooke and Melissa Bates-Cooke, and has since enjoyed a swarm of supportive fans. This is a nano-brewery, which means, generally, they produce their beer with three barrels or less. Their unique, house-blend yeast allows for interesting and flavorful batches.
Some favorites include their chocolatey “Rainbow Cookie Stout” and their bright “Wild Berry Lager.”

5. Destination Unknown: Destination Unknown Beer Company, also known as Dubco, is another Bay Shore-based brewery with great craft beers and a strong fan base. They have been in operation for six years.
DUBCO considers their approach to brewing “A thoughtful mix of old and new.” Owned by passionate homebrewers, their beers are notable for their sheer variation. Nowhere is this more evident than with their seasonal brews. The unique “Science of Selling Piña Coladas IPA” as well as their “Coastal IPA” are fan favorites.

6. Secatogue Brewing Company: Secatogue Brewing Company opened its doors in May of 2019. It has been a welcomed West Islip business, attracting locals and tourists alike for their stunning modern decor and brilliant brews.
Among their current on-tap menu are some great IPAs, including the “Simp” and “Secs Panther,” a “Bold. Exotic. Pungent” brew according to their menu.

7. Brickhouse Brewery & Restaurant: Brick House Brewery & Restaurant’s claim to fame is the fact that it is the oldest craft brewery on Long Island. They opened in June of 1996 in a charming 1850s building in the historic village of Patchogue. Brickhouse Brewery is brimming with history and flavor, which extends from their beers to their restaurant.
On tap currently is their “Blood Orange Ale” fruit beer, as well as the notable “Fun IPA.” As far as their ample restaurant is concerned, great burgers, entrees, and sides await to be paired with their brews.

8. Lithology Brewing Co.: Lithology Brewing Co. opened up their doors in July of 2016 on Farmingdale’s Main Street, attracting attention for their 60 percent locally sourced and expressive beers. They have earned several awards for their hard work, most notably awards from the New York International Beer Competition in 2016 and 2017.
Some award-winning beers of theirs include their “Lithology Brown Ale” and their “LI Detector Double IPA.”

9. 1940’s Brewing Company: 1940’s Brewing in Holbrook is a continuation of owner Charles Becker’s deep family roots of the brewing tradition. According to their website, the very name of the brewery is an homage to the year Becker’s father graduated from brewing academy.
Their “Erstur Kuss Hefeweizen”, made with raspberries for a hint of a berry taste, as well as their “Just Tap It In IPA” are some of their favorites

10. Long Ireland Beer Company: Long Ireland Beer Company is traditionally Irish, focusing on authentic ales and stouts. Owners Dan Burke and Greg Martin opened up their brewery in March of 2009. Since opening, they have seen a positive reception for their beers rooted in Irish tradition.
They host parties and theme nights in their tasting room. There, patrons can find some of the best Irish brews around. Their flagship “Celtic Ale” as well as seasonal beers like their “Hooligan Irish Stoute” are hearty and delicious beers, among plenty of others.
