A Scarcity in Summer 2021 Rental Options on the East End of Long Island

The eastern end of Long Island has always been a hotspot for summer home sales and rentals, but now more than ever, people are getting ready to flock out east as warmer weather nears.

“There’s very little inventory not just for sale, but also for rentals,”
— Marianne Collins, Real Estate Agent with Brown Harris Stevens

"I think because of the pandemic, people who own houses are using them for themselves," says Collins.

The COVID-19 pandemic is partially responsible for this rise in interest on the eastern end. Plenty of Long Islanders and others nearby in the region have turned to vacations like those the North and South Forks offer as they proceed with caution and avoid extensive travel. For many, renting a home for a week, month or entire summer is a practical way to enjoy a summer vacation without putting themselves at risk.

Available rentals are becoming increasingly sparse at an unprecedented rate for a number of reasons ranging from landlords using the hot market opportunity to sell their homes or taking shelter from the pandemic in them, to renters acting prematurely and getting their bookings done earlier than usual.

Because of the scarcity of these rentals on the southern end, renters are turning to the North Fork for more options. However, the northern end appears even less prepared for this influx of demand. Just like the south end, rental property supply is at an all time low on the North Fork on account of a few factors, one being that those who ran to their North Fork homes for shelter have not left.

While there are few summer 2021 rental options available, there aren’t zero. However, it is best to look sooner rather than later to ensure you get the rental option of your choice.
